Where are you? Right now, as you read this – where are you?
Are you safe? Are you warm? Are you comfortable? Are you happy? Are you fulfilled?
Earlier this year it was reported that throughout the world, wars and persecution have driven more people from their homes than at any time since records began. In 2015, 24 people were forced to flee every minute of the day. A total of 65.3 MILLION people were displaced at the end of 2015.
Of course, these figures only cover those people who are forced to flee due to war and persecution throughout the world. So many others are forced to flee from their homes due to abuse, neglect, violence, and other reasons. Homelessness on our own streets in the UK is on the increase. Poverty is knocking at the doors of many who are facing hunger and wondering how to pay the rent next week or next month.
Come on! WAKE UP! This is the 21st Century! We live in a civilised society – don’t we? Why do we tolerate such poverty and homelessness in our own communities; why do we turn a blind eye to to the abuse and the violence in our own neighbourhoods, let alone to what is happening all over the world. Are we so numbed to it all, that we just let it happen?
Or maybe you are one of those people who need refuge?
Maybe you need to be rescued from a life of a mediocrity, mundane, monotonous existence? Maybe you need to seek refuge from becoming anaesthetised against atrocities, numb to neglect, brainwashed to believe that the world does not need you to speak up or to act?
What society needs is an injection of compassion!
We all need an injection of compassion. I speak to myself as I write these words. Look around – really look around at what’s going on around you – in your street, your village, your town, your county, your country, your world. Let’s open our eyes, and let’s show a bit of compassion to those around us. It doesn’t have to take much – just say hello to the person who’s walking past you on the street, looking sullen and down in the dumps; just wave to the person in the car, or on the bus, as they drive past looking miserable; just offer a cup of tea or coffee to the next person who looks as though they need one; lend an ear to a friend who’s going through a tough time.
There are so many ways that you can show a little bit of compassion. As you show a little compassion to those around you, bear a thought to those who are displaced due to abuse or violence, war and persecution, throughout the world. Help us give ‘A Little Bit of Hope!’ to those who are looking for refuge, as we look at ways that we may partner with Flame International – a charity that works to help people in war-ravaged countries all over the world.
