We’re all on a journey through life. Last week we heard that if you want to change something in your life – if you want to work towards fulfilling your dreams and desires, your ambition and aspiration – you need to “start where you are, use what you’ve got, do what you can.” At times, you can be so far away from where you want to be. Your dreams and desires, your ambition and aspirations can be so far from where you are now, that it seems impossible. It seems so distant, the journey so long and arduous, that you just don’t know where or how to start.
My Mad March Mighty Mountain Marathon
Some years ago, I set out on a “Mad March Mighty Mountain Marathon” to raise money for a mission trip to Africa. At that time, I never knew what it would lead to – the start of a new social enterprise and a charity – making a real difference in people’s lives and in the community. Before I set out, I knew I had an arduous task ahead. It was a marathon in terms of distance, with 15 of Wales’ highest mountains between the start and finish line.
Crib Goch – treacherous terrain
One of the mountain I had never climbed before, because of its treacherous terrain and a sheer drop of over 1,000 feet either side of a narrow ridge, over 3,000 feet above sea level. What’s more, the weather conditions weren’t too good either – as you can imagine, in March. Wales is a land of green valleys and beautiful landscapes. But the greenery comes at a price – rain, particularly on the highest summits.
It was a real challenge, particularly as I don’t like heights! But I knew that to have any chance of getting the task done, I had to take the first step! Without taking that first step, I wouldn’t have got anywhere! And we certainly wouldn’t have raised the £2,000 or so that was needed in order to make a difference to a community over 7,000 miles away. Somehow, the 24 miles or so I had to walk was only a short journey compared to the real journey to South Africa that would take place soon after.
I don’t know what mountains you face today; what challenges or obstacles lie ahead of you. I don’t know how far you have to travel to make your dreams come true, or to achieve your ambitions. But I do know that if you don’t take that first step, you’re probably not going anywhere!
